On June 14, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a four-week delay to the final easing of lockdown measures as the latest Delta variant has sparked a surge in COVID-19 cases.
The UK reported 7,742 new cases of COVID-19 the same day and three deaths. Johnson said the rate of infection was growing at 64 percent week on week, and numbers in ICUs were rising across the country.
Speaking at Downing Street, Johnson stated a target for two-thirds of the adult population to be fully vaccinated by July 19, which may result in an easing of social distancing restrictions.

Johnson said the delay would allow time to prepare a second jab for people over age 50, all frontline medical workers and those who are over 40 who received their first jab by mid-May.
"Now is the time to ease off the accelerator (of COVID-19) because by being cautious now we have the chance in the next four weeks to save many thousands of lives by vaccinating millions more people," Johnson said.

Medical advisors believe the Delta variant is 40-80 percent more transmissible than the Alpha variant, first identified in Kent. Cases of the new variant are currently growing at 70 percent week on week across the UK.
But new data from Public Health England highlighted the effectiveness against the Delta variant of two vaccines in use.
The analysis suggested BioNTech"s vaccine is 96 percent effective, while Oxford-AstraZeneca"s vaccine is 92 percent effective.
